You’ll be antelope hunting during the rut so the bucks are pretty single-minded but this in no way means you won’t see them departing your vicinity at 50+ mph. Your guides, however, are very familiar with these animals’ patterns and with the vast territory of this ranch; they will be able to put you in the best position to make a good shot.
Having glassed the options for a short while, the main decision you’ll have to make is what shape of trophy you’d like to pursue; you’ll see them tall and sweeping back, sweeping in, long cutters, heavy mass up to high cutters, heart shaped racks…the beauty and quality of the animals here is impressive.
After your animal is down and you have a few pics for the scrapbook your guide will make short work of field dressing and you’ll head back into town right away to the local meat processor who will expertly clean and prep your cape and trophy; and cut and wrap your meat for shipping.
This entire area has a deep American history attached to it, the ranch sits directly on the Santa Fe Trail, there are even still some buildings on the ranch that were built during the days of the Santa Fe Trail. If you end up with some time to check out the area there are some spots well worth the drive.
The NRA Whittington Center is a short drive north. See some amazing mounts from the area and from around the world, pick up a souvenir and check out the vast displays of the history of American firearms and northern New Mexico.
Before leaving your New Mexico antelope hunt, don’t pass up an opportunity to visit the historic St. James Hotel in nearby Cimarron; go for a fine dining experience but take a look around at the history of the old building while you’re there. More than a restaurant, it is steeped in museum quality history; more than a museum, guests can still stay for a night in one of the mid 1800’s styled rooms, fair warning though, Ghost Adventures has filmed a show here.
This building is a time capsule from the Santa Fe Trail era; find some familiar names in the old log-in registers, hear some of the stories from the about the history (and ghosts) of the building and take a look around the Hotel rooms (except for room 18, it’s padlocked and closed to the public; ask about that story; and maybe they will finally allow your guides to take a look in there, they’ve been trying to for years). If you happen to belly up to the bar…look up…there are still bullet holes through the tin ceiling plates, one of which you can follow through a picture hanging in the 2nd floor hallway.

Lodging and Accomodations
Hunters will stay at the Broken Arrow Motel in Springer, NM; newly remodeled, very clean, southwestern style…guests enjoy all the modern amenities: showers, flat screen with satellite, fridge, microwave, coffee maker and WIFI.
The outfitter will provide light, portable, breakfast bar type fare that hunters can grab-n-go with a cup of coffee on the way out to a glassing spot before the sun comes up. If hunters prefer, they can swing by the convenience store on the way out of town (they carry a variety of decent, good sized, handmade burritos; along with the standard convenience store snacks and coffee).
When you take an early afternoon break from the field there are a choice of local restaurants where a good lunch can be had. For being kind of out in the sticks, there are some surprisingly good options for dinners around the area. Once the day is done and everybody has had a chance to clean up, the guides can suggest several very good restaurants not too far away; there is some good southwestern BBQ and don’t pass on an opportunity to eat at the historic St. James Hotel in nearby Cimarron.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Guides
The guides have a thorough knowledge of firearms, the habits and trophy quality of the antelope, every inch of the massive ranch and hunting in general (they will be guiding elk hunters on the same ranch during the New Mexico rifle elk hunting season)
Typical Daily Schedule
A hunting day generally starts at 0:dark:30 with a pot of coffee that was prepared the night before along with a quick, light breakfast that you can carry along with you on the pickup ride out to your 1st glassing point before the sun comes up.
Once the sky starts to lighten up there will be plenty to look at; the Antelope will be up and ambling around the vast plains as you slowly move through the ranch until you find the buck you like and begin your setup on him. The Antelope will be out grazing and rutting all morning until they bed down in groups in early afternoon. There are a couple of close places to get a good lunch at this point and the rest of the afternoon can be spent hunting.
After the light is gone and hunting is done for the day it’s back to a warm room to clean up, throw on some clean clothes and the guides will take you out to a nice dinner at a choice of good local restaurants.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator el_width=”50″][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear”]
