The Free-Range Red Stag: A Hunter’s Ultimate Prize

In the heart of Calamuchita Valley, red stags reign supreme, some vying for Gold Medal status. Introduced from Europe a century ago, these free-range titans roam vast, rugged terrain, honed by evading pumas and navigating gaucho lands.

Horseback Hunting

Hunting on horses makes for a great fair chase hunting adventure. The horses provide unbeatable access to this beautiful land and the view from the saddle is amazing. Horses not your style? You may also choose to hunt from a 4X4 truck.

Hunt the Roar

From late March to early April, the red deer rut explodes—stags unleash bone-rattling roars, antlers clash, and the valleys hum with primal energy. If the roar fades or you’re hunting pre or post rut, the challenge deepens: you and your guide will slip through thorny caldén scrub, reading faint tracks in volcanic soil, trying to outsmart a stag that melts into ravines. Argentina red stag hunting can be demanding—long treks, shifting winds, and elusive quarry test your resolve. Yet that’s the free-range allure: when a giant falls after a hard-won stalk, the victory is yours alone.

Most hunters triumph, their tales as grand as their trophies. Free-range hunting offers no certainties (60-80% success), but every trophy earned through grit and skill is a testament to fair-chase glory. Packages are a rare value for such regal quarry.

340 to 400+ SCI

Water Buffalo Hunting

Year-round behemoths, water buffalo weigh 2,000 pounds with 50+ inch sweeping horns, descended from Asian stock. Their thick hides and charging instincts make for an electrifying, up-close hunt. Stalk them in grassy valleys or near waterholes with a .375 H&H or .416 Rigby at 100 yards; bowhunters need heavy arrows and grit. Offering SCI Gold potential, they’re a dangerous game thrill akin to Africa’s cape buffalo, testing your nerve.

Trophy Species & Hunting Highlights

  • Blackbuck Antelope: Sleek and swift, blackbuck antelope race at 50 mph, their spiraled horns stretching 20-24 inches. Hailing from India but thriving in Córdoba’s plains, they’re a year-round favorite, often paired with other species. Their keen eyesight requires meticulous spot-and-stalk, creeping hills with a .270 at 150 yards or a bow at 40. March-July breeding brings grunting bucks, amplifying the chase. A blackbuck’s grace makes every trophy a prized keepsake.
  • Fallow Deer: Cunning fallow deer, huntable until August 31, flaunt palmated antlers up to 30 inches and coats from spotted fawn to dark chocolate. They lurk in Calamuchita’s forested slopes, blending with sharp senses. Spot-and-stalk or blind hunts at dawn/dusk work best, using a .308 at 200 yards or a bow at 30. Their April-May rut offers rattling chances, but winter hunts hone tracking skills. Fallow’s striking antlers reward patient hunters.
  • Mouflon: Rugged mouflon sheep, with curling horns up to 35 inches, roam the ranch’s rocky highlands year-round. Their Mediterranean roots and agility demand foot or horseback stalks in craggy terrain, using a .270 at 200-300 yards or a bow at 40. Winter hunts (June-August) offer cooler conditions, but their sharp eyesight tests skill. Mouflon’s compact frame and trophy horns are a coveted addition for any collector.
  • Multi-Horned Sheep: A rare gem, multi-horned sheep sport bizarre, multi-curved horns—sometimes four or more—reaching 30 inches. Available year-round, they wander grassy valleys to rocky outcrops, requiring patient spot-and-stalk with a .30-06 at 150-250 yards or a bow at 30-40. Winter aligns with milder weather, but bowhunters need extra days for their elusive nature. These exotic sheep’s unique antlers make them a standout trophy.

How to Get Your Trophy Back Home

Fortunately, in Argentina, there exist specialized companies dedicated to managing the intricate logistics and transportation of your prized large game trophies. These reputable companies possess the expertise to handle and meticulously prepare the trophies on-site, meticulously adhering to both international export regulations and the specific preferences of their esteemed clientele. Among their array of services, trophy handling companies often engage in processes such as salting and drying the hides, dipping, bleaching, and meticulously dissecting the skulls. Additionally, they may collaborate with skilled taxidermists, who meticulously assess the trophies’ quality to ensure their suitability for export.

Furthermore, these companies undertake the responsibility of completing and filing all essential paperwork and permits, ensuring a seamless and hassle-free experience for the hunter. Once the trophies are prepared and the necessary export documents are duly issued, the shipping arrangements are organized. It is important to note that when exporting trophies from Argentina, most shipping companies necessitate the delivery of trophies to a customs broker at the destination country to facilitate the required clearance procedures. Some companies have established partnerships with a select list of trusted brokers, while experienced hunters have the option to provide their preferred broker’s information. Upon successful clearance at the destination country, the trophies can be conveniently shipped either directly to the hunter or their chosen taxidermist.

Anticipated shipping timelines typically indicate that your well-deserved trophy will depart Argentina within 12 months from the conclusion of your hunt. To facilitate a smooth process, it is advisable to allocate at least an additional day in the area or at your hunting lodge after the conclusion of your hunt, ensuring the necessary permits and trophies are meticulously prepared. It is worth noting that numerous trophy handling companies offer comprehensive packages tailored specifically for hunters from the United States. These all-inclusive packages often encompass not only the export and shipping procedures but may even extend to the mounting of trophies within the United States, delivering a truly turnkey solution for discerning hunters.
