This red stag hunt is a great hunt for someone who wants to harvest a large stag in New Zealand. This outfitter is one of the most experienced and oldest outfitters in the country. The guides are very well experienced hunters that have hunted all of the world. With their vast knowledge and experience this outfitter is ready to provide the hunter with a stag of a lifetime.

Much of your hunt will include driving the mountain roads while spotting. When a stag is spotted the hunter and guide will make a plan to stalk and make the shot. Hunters can pass up on deer but success on trophy size bulls will be dependent upon the hunters abilities both physically and their shooting capabilities.

  • Free range stags or an estate hunt on private ranches range from 10,400 to 48,000 acres.
  • Expect to hunt river bottoms, rolling hills, up to open higher and steeper country.
  • Season is from March to October
  • High trophy quality. You can expect 5×5’s up to to 8×8 stags.
  • 4 full hunting days
  • 1:1 or 2:1 guiding depending on request of hunter
  • Tahr and chamois hunting is also available.

Lodging and Accommodations

This outfitter has two lodges that are both very nice.

  • The first lodge is three bedrooms and can accommodate single hunters, two couples, or a small family.
  • The second lodge is larger with four rooms and sleeps ten people.
  • Both lodges include TV, laundry, Wifi, en suites. For those that wish to camp on the property in the hunting area there is a little cabin with a fireplace, bedroom, and toilet. Whichever way you decide to go the experience will be worth it!
  • Breakfast will include a Continental or cooked meal with fruit, coffee, tea, water, juice, soda.
  • Lunch may include sandwiches, pre-cooked hot lunch, dinner rolls, cake, water, coffee, juice, and/or soda.
  • Dinner may be hot home style cooked steak, venison, lamb, chicken, pork, fish with a desert with choices of beer or wine.
  • For one dinner during your stay you will go into town at one of the local bars or restaurants.

Guides

The guides for this outfit are of the highest caliber and experience. Their knowledge and expertise will come in handy as you hunt one of New Zealand’s most beautiful game animals. The guide will field dress and cape your trophy as well as provide transportation for you during your hunt. They will be a highly experienced individual that is ready to help you harvest the free range stag you have dreamed of.

Typical Daily Schedule

Each day you will start with either a home cooked breakfast or a continental breakfast. Following breakfast you will drive with your guide 20-30 minutes to your hunting destination. You and your guide will glass from the mountain roads to locate your bull. Once a bull is found you and your guide will make plans to harvest it. After you successfully make the stalk your guide will take pictures, field dress and cape your trophy. Depending on the time of year you will either eat lunch on the ranch or go back to the lodge for a lunch. Your evening will include your choice of cocktails and a three course meal.

Travel Information

Your destination will be Fairlie in the South Island New Zealand. Closest airport is Timaru (35mins drive), Christchurch is 2.5 hrs.

  • Nearest Airport: Air New Zealand is the most common airline used. Flights usually arrive in Auckland first, then Wellington, ending in Timaru. Or Auckland to Christchurch.
  • Outfitter Pickup: This is available and is included in the hunt cost.
  • Transportation During Trip: The guide will drive you around in their vehicle, or use of a 4×4 will be used. Horses can also be used on request.

  • Personal and hunting gear.
  • Meat has to been taken with you when you leave the country. The easiest way is frozen and in a small cooler in your main baggage that works well. Trophy shipping will vary according to expediting or taxidermic in New Zealand. This can be organized at the end of the hunt at the taxidermy shop or we can send you the information to get into touch with the taxidermist before hand.
  • Taxidermy costs.
  • Trip Insurance is highly recommended for any International trip.
  • While a tip is not required, it is very much appreciated, and guides and lodge staff often depend on them a supplemental income. Learn how much to tip a hunting guide.
