Northern Alberta Canada Moose Hunt

Alberta Moose Hunting in Wood Buffalo National Park Region

This premier moose hunt takes place in northern Alberta, near the Wood Buffalo National Park border. This vast, remote area is ideal for hunting, with Wood Buffalo National Park being the world’s second-largest national park, spanning over 44,000 square kilometers (11 million acres). The park’s isolation provides a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including the largest free-roaming wood bison herd, numbering around 3,500, according to Parks Canada.

The park is home to 46 mammal species, including iconic animals like bison, moose, wolves, black bears, beavers, and woodland caribou. The region’s ecosystem features a dynamic predator-prey relationship, where wolves, as apex predators, maintain a balanced population of ungulates. This wildlife abundance extends beyond the park’s borders, enhancing the hunting experience in surrounding areas. Moose and wolf populations thrive in the territories south of the park, where the hunting camps are located, just 60 miles away. Their nearby bear camp is also renowned for consistently producing trophy-sized black bears, with many measuring over 7 feet.

The Hunting Territory

Our extensive hunting area covers 1,800 square miles, stretching 60 miles south of Wood Buffalo National Park. The natural boundaries are defined by Birch Mountain to the west and the Athabasca River to the east, with the boreal forest providing exceptional moose habitat. The region’s terrain is rich with marshes, swamps, and beaver dams. Oil sands exploration has left behind a network of trails and cutlines, making access easier for hunters.

Canada Moose in Northern Alberta

Northern Alberta is home to the Canada Moose, one of four moose subspecies found in Canada. While Shiras moose may be smaller compared to Yukon specimens, trophy Canada moose can achieve remarkable sizes, often boasting antler spreads exceeding 60 inches and scoring in the low 200s, comparable to top-ranking Alaska-Yukon moose recognized by Boone & Crockett.

These Northern Alberta moose hunts can be combined with a black bear and offer great opportunities to harvest a Timber Wolf.

Lodging and Accommodations

The moose camp, known as “Woody,” takes its name from a nearby black bear baiting site familiar to many of our past hunters.

Situated 40 miles south of the park, the camp is nestled in a spruce forest clearing near a creek. In the fall, we access the camp via a three-hour quad ride or a 45-minute helicopter trip from Fort McMurray International Airport. From Woody, hunters can explore hundreds of miles of trails using ATVs.

The camp itself is designed as a spike camp, featuring a communal kitchen tent and individual sleeping tents, offering a rustic yet comfortable setting for an authentic Alberta moose hunting experience.
