By limiting harvest pressure, this system has allowed bucks to reach full maturity. Combined with the region’s exceptional genetics and rich agricultural nutrition — primarily canola and oat fields — the trophy potential here is among the best available anywhere in North America.

• Expect to encounter 170-inch caliber bucks as a realistic standard on this hunt.

Hunting Methods and Terrain

This is considered an “easy” hunt in terms of physical terrain. Rather than steep mountain climbing or rugged backcountry travel, hunters will be working the open canola and oat fields of the Peace River lowlands. The primary technique is spot and stalk, targeting bucks as they bed in and around these agricultural fields.

• Spot and stalk on bedded bucks is the core hunting method.
• Transportation between hunting locations is handled by your guide, driving to each spot throughout the day.
• Guiding is conducted 1×1 — one guide per hunter — ensuring focused, personalized attention in the field.
• The season runs during mid-September, when bucks are still in bachelor groups and actively using agricultural fields.

What to Expect in the Field

Your guide is a highly skilled hunter with extensive experience both hunting and guiding. Our outfitter takes only two hunters per week, which guarantees individualized service and keeps hunting pressure to an absolute minimum. The combination of low hunter density and high deer numbers means opportunity is exceptional.

One of the most exciting aspects of this hunt is the ability to potentially conduct several stalks in a single day. Seeing bucks gathered in large bachelor groups allows you and your guide to carefully evaluate multiple animals before committing to a stalk — a luxury rarely available on most mule deer hunts.

Field Judging Mule Deer

Understanding how to evaluate a buck quickly in the field is an important part of making the most of your opportunity. Under the Boone and Crockett Club scoring system, a typical mule deer’s gross score is calculated from inside spread, main beam length, tine length, and eight mass measurements. A typical mule deer carries four points per side plus eye guards.

When in the field, a few quick visual cues help determine whether a buck is a true trophy:

• Spread: The distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a mule deer is generally close to 20 inches. If a buck’s antlers extend roughly two inches beyond the outside of each ear, he is carrying approximately a 24-inch spread. Inside spread is the actual measured dimension under B&C rules.
• Tine length: Work from the bottom up. Brow tines (G-1s) are often overlooked but contribute meaningfully to score. Mule deer generally have shorter brow tines compared to whitetails.
• Mass: Eight circumference measurements contribute significantly to total score — a heavy-beamed buck with good mass throughout can score higher than a wide but thin-beamed animal.
• Overall frame: A buck that appears tall, wide, and heavy from a distance is worth a closer look through your optics before deciding to pursue.

Your guide’s experience in the region will be an invaluable asset when evaluating bucks quickly in the field.

Special Hunt Options

• Elk combo: One special option available with this hunt is the ability to combine your mule deer hunt with an elk hunt — making it an outstanding multi-species Alberta adventure.
• November return option: If you do not harvest both of your deer during the September season, you have the ability to return in November to harvest your remaining animal. The only additional obligation on your part would be your own travel costs.

Hunters are accommodated in a comfortable ranch house with a private bedroom and all necessary amenities. The lodge is well-equipped for a relaxing stay between hunts:
