Brown Bear Hunt #KG1

You’ll land in the head of a bay, so hunters will start out sheltered from much of Alaska’s harsh weather. This keeps seas relatively calm for the boat ride out to one of the many hunting locations available and with 2 separate valleys to hunt.

The odds of seeing bears on this hunt are as close to 100% as possible and the outfitter ups the odds by taking hunters out during the most productive time of the open season.

You’ll land in the head of a bay, so hunters will start out sheltered from much of Alaska’s harsh weather. This keeps seas relatively calm for the boat ride out to one of the many hunting locations available and with 2 separate valleys to hunt. The guides have ample options to set hunter’s up so they have the best opportunity of harvesting the Kodiak brown bear they’re after. Transport is not even a factor sometimes as camp is located in the “hibernation corridor” for these Brown Bears and it is not uncommon to glass up bears from camp.

Brown bear tracks.
In the early spring, you will be looking for bears coming out of their dens. Often they will emerge, do some exploring and return again to the den, leaving tracks in the snow. Finding those tracks is fairly easy if you have good glass, but then it’s a long hike in the snowshoes and you hope the bear is still there.

Hunters will return to camp every night where they can enjoy the comfort of their own 16’x28′ heated cabin with a shower and a real bed. A hot “home cooking” style supper will be provided each night and hot breakfast is available every morning (along with other options for those who prefer a lighter start).

The odds of seeing a shooter brown bear on this hunt are as close to 100% as possible and the outfitter ups the odds by taking hunters out during the most productive time of the open season. Harvest rates have been very good as well due to tags being extremely limited, non-residents are required to hunt with a certified guide and the nearest guide operates far from this area.

Do the “KODIAK SLAM” – Brown bear, mountain goat and Sitka blacktail combo.

In the fall hunters have the option to combo their hunt with Sitka blacktail and/or mountain goat, both of which also have thriving populations in this area.

  • Limited hunting pressure in the region; only 5 spring tags and 3 fall tags.
  • Big bears due to the limited hunting; 10′ bears live in this area.
  • 30 years of guiding with a very high success rate; located in the bears’ “hibernation route”.
  • “3 hots and a cot”…A bed actually…return nightly to a heated cabin with bed, shower and hot meals provided.
  • Get walked through the AK Dept. of Fish and Game process of getting tags and permits.

These are draw tags…get put in for the draw on time:

  • Spring hunt application period is Nov 1 – Dec 17 at 5pm
  • Fall hunt application period is May 1 – May 31

Every night clients return to a 16′ x 28′ heated cabin with a bed to sleep in and the option of daily showers. Three home cooked style meals are provided daily (no freeze dried packages).

  • Options are provided for breakfast as some hunters like a hearty breakfast and some like to keep it light in the morning: Eggs, Bacon, Toast, Oatmeal, Cereal, etc. “Real food” is provided for lunch and home cooking for dinner.
  • Lunches will generally be a sandwich based “packed lunch” that travels well because the hunters and guides usually stay out in the field all day.
  • Nightly dinners are what you would hope to have for dinner any night, featuring steaks, pork chops, salmon, burgers… and side dishes to round it out.
  • You will also have electricity in camp, thanks to the generator you can charge cellphones and other small devices nightly in the power outlets located inside your cabin.
  • Verizon cell phone service is within range and local GCI service and a guide in camp will have an Inreach “Sat” phone for communication and up to date NOAH weather reports.
  • Generally 2 hunters in camp in late April, 3 hunters in camp in early May
  • 3 Hunters can be in camp in fall; these hunters often combo with Mt Goat or Sitka Blacktail Deer

Spring Hunts

In the springtime the daylight is increasing (up to 16 hour days in May) so long days can be put in pursuing the right bear. There is no brush grown up yet so glassing is good and once bears have been spotted it’s pretty easy to keep track of them or relocate them as you move into position.

Fall Hunts

In the fall the brush is thicker from the summertime growth and the days are starting to get shorter but the bears have been feasting so they are fat and much more sedentary at this time.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Pricing and Available Dates Provided Upon Request” style=”custom” custom_background=”#1e73be” custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”xs” i_icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-arrow-circle-right” add_icon=”true” link=”url:%23form|||”][vc_empty_space height=”44px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row fullwidth=”yes” background_color=”#ffffff”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”44px”][vc_custom_heading text=”Travel Information” font_container=”tag:h3|font_size:25px|text_align:left|color:%23222222|line_height:30px” google_fonts=”font_family:Rock%20Salt%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_separator color=”custom” align=”align_left” border_width=”3″ el_width=”20″ accent_color=”#1e73be”][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear”]

Fly into Kodiak (Benny Benson State) Airport ADQ.

  • Andrew Airways will pick clients up at the airport and take them to Kodiak Fish and Game Office where bear permits can be picked up. Once permits are in-hand clients will be given the chance to stop in town if they need anything else before being flown out to camp. *Clients are welcome to charter a different taxi service but Andrew Airways has a good working relationship with the outfitter, knows the routine and offers good prices to the outfitter’s clients.
  • Travel through town will cost a standard taxi fee. (Round trip prices)
  • Cessna 206: Approximately $350 – Max gear weight: 750#
  • de Havilland Beaver: Approximately $500 – Max gear weight: 1200#
