Montana Spot-and-Stalk Black Bear Hunt

With the unique option to hunt with hounds

Discover the awakening of spring in southwest Montana, where lingering high-country snow meets vibrant green-up, drawing black bears into the open. This is a great spot-and-stalk hunt—or opt to hunt with hounds, or blend both methods for added versatility. It’s up to you.

You’ll arrive in Dell, MT at 2pm on the day before your hunt. Your outfitter will meet you there and take you to the lodge. Expect to hunt for five days and depart the morning after your hunt. It’s straightforward, just like we like it.

If you book a spot and stalk hunt, you have the option to go 2×1 or 1×1. Hound hunting is 1×1 only.

All hunts include lodging and meals at a private ranch lease near Dell. It’s comfy and located centrally for easy access to our hunting areas. You won’t be roughing it here.

Pack for variable weather and rugged terrain. Think layers, good boots, and the essentials you can’t hunt without.

The country you’ll be hunting in ranges from timbered slopes to open basins, with high ridgelines along the Continental Divide. Hunting areas can be tailored for most able-bodied hunters, but it’s important to understand that the less physically fit a hunter is, the more restrictive conditions may become in certain areas or encounters.

Typical Montana weather—it should be decent, but can change on a dime. Be ready for anything from sunshine to snow.

The outfitter will assist with navigating the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website to acquire the appropriate black bear licenses and understand season regulations. While licenses are the responsibility of the hunter, they’ll make the process straightforward and well-guided. You are welcome to apply yourself and we will still provide coaching through the process.

Pricing varies depending on options and availability. It’s always best to check the trip overview or talk to your consultant directly.

Spring in Southwest Montana: A Season of Awakening

Experience the thrill of transition in southwest Montana’s spring—where lingering snow caps the high country and vibrant green-up draws black bears into open, productive landscapes. This fully guided black bear hunt takes place across permitted U.S. Forest Service lands in the southern reaches of HD 316, tracing the majestic Continental Divide.

Montana’s spring bear season spans May through June 15, strategically aligned with optimal access, bear patterns, and ethical pursuits. While select areas open to motorized travel on May 15, persistent winter snow often restricts early entry. Starting in May virtually guarantees that you’ll be able to hunt prime terrain under safe conditions, with bears foraging actively in daylight.

This is classic Montana spot-and-stalk bear hunting: extended glassing from vantage points, calculated approaches, and thoughtful judgments. Anticipate breathtaking panoramas of the Rocky Mountains, overlooking alpine lakes sitting in lofty basins.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.

The outfitter handled everything perfectly.

We were thankful that Outdoors International hooked us up with a great outfitter because they were able to find us an acceptable alternate on short notice. Overall the two year process to get this float in was seamless and worry free. Just like it should be.

Thank you,
Stan Masneri

What an amazing experience!

The lodge was out of this world! Our rooms, the delicious food, the incredible wildlife and the scenery were amazing. Our photo safari guide was truly exceptional and had us on animals almost constantly. We saw over 30 different species and had some incredible up close experiences. Africa is amazing!
