Alaska Reindeer Hunts

Hunting reindeer in Alaska is a niche and unique opportunity, distinct from standard caribou hunting.

This is a guided free range reindeer hunt on public land on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska.

These populations are often managed by Native corporations or tribes rather than the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. As a result, they are not classified under typical caribou regulations—no caribou harvest ticket or tag is required, which can save significant cost, as non-resident caribou tags are expensive. Instead, hunts are typically guided on with outfitters handling permissions.

What to Expect from the Hunt Experience

The Seward Peninsula, known for its rugged, remote landscape, provides a setting similar to the famous Brooks Range caribou hunts. This is the same country that the Western Arctic Herd migrates through. Expect rolling tundra, wild country, and an exhilarating hunting adventure.

The Terrain and Wildlife
  • Hunt Area

30-50 square miles of wild, open tundra, accessible via ATV and foot.

  • Wildlife Encounters

Besides reindeer, hunters might see wolves, muskox, grizzly bears, and even migratory caribou, depending on the season.

  • Scenery

Fly into Nome, Alaska, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Bering Sea and untouched wilderness.

Hunting Conditions & Success Rate

The non-migratory nature of these reindeer means your chances of success are high—approaching near 100%. The animals are scattered but fairly predictable, and with proper glassing and spot-and-stalk tactics, hunters can efficiently locate and harvest a trophy reindeer.

The Trophy Quality

Expect large, heavy antlers with multiple points, impressive splits, and wild configurations. Many bulls sport a striking white cape.

Additional Hunt Options

Hunters also have the option to add a grizzly bear or wolf—though a license and tag are required. The area is known for a healthy population of Arctic grizzlies and tons of wolves.

Logistics and Practical Details

This hunt is designed for ease and comfort, minimizing potential delays and logistical challenges.

  • Travel

Fly commercially into Nome with Alaska Airlines, avoiding the unpredictable weather delays common in bush flying.

  • Transport

Once in Nome, ground transportation takes hunters to a comfortable wall tent camp—eliminating the need for bush flights.

  • Duration

Five-day hunts with six nights accommodations, typically scheduled from mid-August to early September, aligning with the changeover from velvet to hard horn.

The Hunt Itself
  • Guide Service

Experienced guides lead spot-and-stalk hunts in rolling hills and tundra of the Arctic.

  • Hunting Method

ATV-based hunting with hiking and glassing by day, tracking the animals in their wild habitat.

  • Success Factors

The non-migratory behavior and vast area make success highly probable, often approaching 100%.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll be up early in the morning, heading out on ATVs to glass the tundra and rolling hills. Once we spot a good bull, it’s time to dismount and stalk on foot. Expect to spend a lot of time glassing—patience is key out here. After a full day of hunting, you’ll return to the wall tent camp for a hearty meal and some well-deserved rest.

Our suggested gear list covers everything you’ll need. Make sure to bring quality optics for glassing and layers for varying weather conditions. Pack light but smart. Check out the full list here.

Mid-August to early September usually means milder weather, but it’s Alaska, so be prepared for anything. You might start the day in a t-shirt and end it in a parka. Layers are your friend.

Pretty darn high. The reindeer here are non-migratory, making them fairly predictable if you put in the time glassing. Our 2:1 guiding ratio ensures you get plenty of attention. Most hunters leave with a trophy bull.

If you have the right license and tags, you can shoot a grizzly bear or a wolf for an added trophy fee. It’s a great opportunity to maximize your hunting trip.

You’ll be staying in a comfortable wall tent camp. It’s rustic but cozy, exactly what you want after a long day out on the tundra.

Expect some hiking over uneven terrain. Good physical condition will help you enjoy the hunt more, but you don’t need to be a marathon runner. Just be prepared for some trekking and the occasional scramble.

You’ll fly into Nome, and from there, your outfitter will handle transportation to the camp. It’s straightforward, but make sure your travel plans align with the itinerary.

You don’t need a hunting license or tag to hunt for reindeer, but you will for any additional species you want to hunt. Make sure all paperwork is in order before you arrive.

Underestimating the weather is a big one. It can change rapidly, so always be prepared with the right gear. Another is not spending enough time glassing; patience is key.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.
