Kamchatka Brown Bear Hunts
Outdoors International TRIP #OI-ARQ3

Kamchatka Brown Bear Hunt

This is a truly exceptional hunting expedition.

Kamchatka will make you rethink everything previously known or imagined about brown bear hunting. Experience an extraordinary brown bear hunt to the fabled Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. This remote wilderness is renowned for its colossal coastal brown bears, and lots of them! In fact, this hunt allows multiple bears to be taken, if desired.

There is no other destination like it; Kamchatka brown bear hunts are simply the most productive in the world. Populations are historically high, and there is no legal limit on the number of bears taken. In fact, this area has averaged two bears per hunter for over 20 years!  After Russian hunting largely laid dormant for years, our hunters have improved on that average.

That’s the most common question we get asked. This OI Premier Outfitter is more than bullish on Russian hunting and the good people of Russia. They have hunting
operations in place for all the species. Anyone on the sidelines feeling hesitant about what to do is encouraged to contact us for the complete story of
the trip and insights about all of our Russian hunts.

Yes, Outdoors International Consultant, Kyle Hanson vetted this trip in May of 2025.

Spring in Kamchatka is synonymous with exceptionally deep snow, often accumulating to several feet. While this might seem like an insurmountable barrier for traditional hunting, it poses no issue for our highly skilled Itelmen guiding team. These local experts, much like Alaskan Eskimos and the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic, have perfected their reliance on super-tuned snow machines to navigate this challenging terrain.

Each morning, guides will cover vast distances, efficiently locating fresh bear tracks and spotting animals from afar. The hunters are comfortably towed behind in a specially designed sleds. This method is similar to how successful polar bear and muskox hunts are conducted in other remote, snow-bound regions.

The profound snow levels completely alter the typical hunting approach; traditional spot-and-stalk tactics are simply not feasible. With snow so deep that dismounting the sled means sinking up to your thigh or even waist, extensive walking is often impossible. Therefore, the combination of machine and sled becomes the essential, and often only, way to effectively penetrate the wilderness, pinpoint bears, and strategically get into position for a trophy shot. This unique form of hunting is deeply cultural for the Itelmen, ingrained in their way of life, and hunters quickly adapt to its necessities, finding it an incredibly effective and often thrilling experience.

The guides understand trophy hunting, and leave camp each morning with a goal of taking a 10-footer or better. This is a realistic expectation because big bears are there in big numbers!

Trophy quality is a matter of pride to them, and they are totally vested in the principles of selective hunting for the wide skulls, big bodies, and haired-out skins that attract trophy hunters to Kamchatka. They will deliver on your expectations.

  • 2024 April/May season: 4 hunters took 11 big bears in 6 total days of hunting. Each bear squared 10’ or better, and 2 exceeded 11’ square – all with wonderful pelts.

This exclusive area is vast and remote – accessible only by helicopter charter (included in the hunt price). The camp consists of heated cabins, and hunters share the biggest cabin. It’s basic and entirely functional – big enough for comfort and each hunter’s hunting gear.

A dedicated camp cook prepares hot meals like bacon, eggs, porridge, soups, meats, and fresh produce. Sleds carry satisfying lunches and hot tea. Water is sourced from pristine springs and streams, then boiled for purity.

The guides expertly skin, re-flesh, and salt your bear hide, meticulously preparing the skull for its next stage. Post-hunt, the outfitter partners with Russia’s top taxidermy firm, leveraging unique tanning chemicals for superior results praised by North American experts.

This ensures your taxidermist receives a mount-ready trophy, bypassing North American tanneries and accelerating completion. Expect your trophy at your designated port within 6-7 months. Outfitter will handle all export documentation and logistics, keeping you updated on its journey.

We work with hundreds of outfitters, and pricing typically changes from year to year, so it’s a difficult task to keep the website current. That avoids the issue of having outdated prices on these online brochures, thanks for your understanding.

Kamchatka Brown Bear Hunt Opportunity

This hunt offers a unique opportunity to pursue coastal brown bears in one of the world’s most productive regions, the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. Operated by one of our Premier outfitters, it focuses on high-density bear populations in remote wilderness, emphasizing efficient, guided hunts with proven results. Below is a detailed overview based on the available details, structured for clarity. For current pricing and availability, please contact an Outdoors International consultant.

Location and Terrain

The hunt is based in the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, an area known for its colossal coastal brown bears and untouched wilderness. Access is exclusively by helicopter from Esso to a dedicated camp in an exclusive zone with no human traffic beyond the guiding team. The terrain includes mountainous, coastal, and forested areas with deep spring snow (several feet), making traditional spot-and-stalk challenging. Instead, hunts utilize super-tuned snow machines and specially designed sleds for mobility, allowing hunters to cover ground effectively while being towed. Pristine springs and streams provide water sources, and the environment supports high bear activity, including dens, caches, and natural behaviors like cannibalism among bears.

Species and Hunting Method

Target species: Coastal brown bears (Ursus arctos), with no legal limit on the number taken—hunters often harvest multiple mature boars. Methods involve locating fresh tracks, glassing from afar, and strategic stalks adapted to snowy conditions. Guides, from the local Itelmen team, are highly experienced and culturally attuned to the area. Bowhunting is available with advance planning, and one specific date accommodates archery hunters. Rifle options include personal firearms (with permits) or rentals (Sako/Blazer-style bolt actions in .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, or .375 H&H; 100% of 2025 hunters used rentals). Ammo is provided with rentals.

I didn't think an experience like this was possible.

This trip, was, for me at least not just a trip, for me it was a real adventure, a real experience. I love the wilderness and this trip afforded me the opportunity to connect with the Alaskan wilderness in ways very few people do. It was an experience I will never forgot in a place I can’t wait to get back to.
